life’s big chessboard [poem]

I’ve always been more of a go with the flow kind of girl
the kind of person who prefers checkers to chess
because I don’t enjoy the balance of
always thinking twelve steps ahead of myself
you can’t live in the moment
if you’re focused on the next step
before you’ve even finished the first one
that’s not to say I’m not a planner
I’m an expert list maker
who knows how to break things down
into manageable pieces
and keep myself on task long enough
to finish important things
but the trade off is letting go
letting my mind wander
and my path deviate from the expected
I know I’ll get where I’m going
regardless of the distractions I allow
I’m just not made to follow rules
of life’s big chessboard
