do not engage, let it go [poem]

when you overhear the old men grumbling in the café
about kids these days and those damned liberal hippies
do not engage
let it go

when they talk about the stupidity of having blue hair
while you sit a few feet away with lavender locks
remember that they don’t know you and it isn’t personal
do not engage
let it go

when the old friend from high school uses his social media
to talk shit about geeks and their
constant barrage of merchandise everywhere you look
recognize his jealousy as his own problem
he only wishes his own interests were as easily accessible
do not engage
let it go

when your ex publishes his shitty little novel for free online
you’re allowed to imagine for a moment the pleasure
of creating a dozen accounts
just to give him a dozen bad reviews
but then your have to take a deep breath and be the adult
do not engage
let it go

when someone labels you
places you into a box of normalcy
based on a limited experience of what you’re like
in a work setting no less
correct them only if not doing so will cause you harm
your best option will always be the easiest
do not engage
let it go
